Best Amsterdam Food Tours to Try

Amsterdam may not be the first city people think of for food tours, but I actually think it is a fun one for them. Part of the appeal is that many travelers go in expecting canals, museums, and pretty streets, then end up pleasantly surprised by the food side of the trip.

That makes a food tour feel a little more unexpected in a good way.

If I were choosing one for a first trip, I would focus on tours in Jordaan. That neighborhood shows up again and again in current Amsterdam food tour listings, and I think that is a very good sign. It is attractive, walkable, and a nice place to spend time even before you factor in the tastings. Viator’s current Amsterdam food tour options in Jordaan often include Dutch specialties like Gouda cheese, Dutch apple pie, and herring, while other tours branch into broader Dutch food experiences and even touches of Indonesian rijsttafel, which reflects a real part of the city’s food story.

That is what makes Amsterdam food tours interesting to me. They are not just about one famous dish. They are about getting introduced to a range of Dutch tastes you might not have ordered on your own. Bitterballen, stroopwafels, poffertjes, cheese, herring, and apple pie all help tell the story of eating in Amsterdam, and official city tourism materials still spotlight those kinds of foods as things visitors should try.

For first-time visitors, I think a Jordaan small-group tasting walk is the strongest choice. It gives you the best combination of neighborhood charm and accessible Dutch classics. Amsterdam is a city where I really like pairing food with walking, and Jordaan is ideal for that. You get pretty canals, quieter streets, and enough local character to make the experience feel more personal.

I also think a broader Dutch food tour can be worth it if you are genuinely curious about local food culture and want something more than just snack stops. Some current tours include more substantial tastings and lean into the city’s wider culinary influences. That can be a great fit for travelers who have already done the canal cruise and museum thing and want another angle on Amsterdam.

The one thing I would not do is choose a food tour expecting a grand gourmet Paris-style experience. That is not really the point here. Amsterdam food tours are at their best when they feel casual, curious, and neighborhood-driven. They are about discovering flavors you might have skipped, not dressing up for an ultra-fancy culinary event.

If I were sorting the best choices for first-timers, I would keep it simple.

The best overall choice is a Jordaan district food walking tour with a good range of Dutch tastings.

The best choice for travelers who want the biggest introduction to Dutch food is a grand Dutch food tour that includes both classics and a few deeper cuts.

The best choice for lighter snackers is a shorter tasting-led walk focused on sweets, cheese, and just a couple of savory stops.

I think Amsterdam food tours are worth trying if you want to add a little personality to a trip that can otherwise become museum-heavy. They are not the first thing I would tell every traveler to book, but they are one of the more enjoyable ways to break up the trip and taste more of the city than you would by accident.
